Carrie Gaetz crowned best local comedian

Best comedian is just one of two awards local comedy favourite Carrie Gaetz has won over the past two months. The other: first place in the Ottawa leg of the Yuk Yuk's Great Canadian Laugh Off, which guarantees her a spot at the finals in March. Impressive for anyone, but especially someone relatively new to the comedy scene. "I've been at this just over two years now," says Gaetz. "The support in this city is so great - it's just such a ripe area for comedy."

Gaetz's debut two years ago was at a local comedy benefit ("as one of the opening acts for Russell friggin' Peters") and since then she's worked hard at honing her act and it's paid off. Gaetz has developed a natural stage presence and a quick-paced, confident delivery that lets her tackle non-political topics (and salesgirls) head-on while still seeming good-natured. "Anybody who's making a living as a female comic knows that it can be tough," says Gaetz, "but at the same time, we're still a little uncommon, a little unique. So I got some opening spots probably sooner than I would have if I had even more hair on my chest."

Gaetz will be MC at Absolute Comedy November 29 to December 3. Also, keep an ear out for her on an upcoming edition of Shaun Majumder's CBC comedy show, The Debaters.
