The Hilotrons surprised by best band award - Ottawa isn't
photo: Aaron McKenzie Fraser

It wouldn't be wrong to say that the Hilotrons are a prolific lot. The band released Bella Simone earlier this year and played a host of gigs around town, including a scorching set at Westfest and Bluesfest, to help promote that album. According to guitarist Paul Hogan, the group is two or three songs away from finishing up yet another album. "We're learning lots of new songs, so we might as well record them," he says in his quiet, matter-of-fact fashion. It doesn't hurt that the band's drummer (Phil Shaw Bova) and his dad own Bova Sound Studios, making access to a recording facility not an issue.

Hogan was kind of surprised to hear that his band had won an award, but other local artists like Jim Bryson weren't surprised at all. Bryson considers them one of the most underrated bands in Canada. "Once they get some wind in their sails they could be big." XPress readers agree, selecting them as this year's best rock band/artist in the annual XPress Best of Ottawa Readers Poll. Catch
the Hilotrons on Saturday, December 2, at Mavericks, or the two Mikes as Boycrusher (side project) on Friday, November 24, as part of XPress' Best Of party at Barrymore's.

Crocodile Dundee Has Nothing On These Guys...........

There may be another Paul Hogan worth noting in these parts. Hogan, of the aforementioned Hilotrons can kick some serious butt and do with seemingly every move they make. Underappreciated, underrated, under-the-radar are all terms that describe these "Cool Cats" emnbarking on some frequent and enjoyable tour dates in the coming months. One of the advantages that the Hilotrons have, as mentioned by the astute Mr Reilly is the accessibility factor to working in a studio (Bova Sound Studios) that may be the turning point between continuing to grow and gather fanfare, while other bands are still trying to make a break for it and counting penny rolls in dark and cold garages.

Memories of Ric Ocasek.

The Hilotrons are on my CD player right now. They sound a lot like another band I really liked called The Cars and have a really interesting sound.

The people have spoken!

It's no surprise The Hilotrons were voted Best Band! They are in my opinion Ottawa's band. I hope they're successes go way beyond the boarders of Ottawa.
keep it up.
