There are still ambulance services in Hope and the surrounding towns: hospita
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. is looking into the death of a man who was shot by an RCMP officer in the Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope, B.C., on Wednesday. Hope is about 152 kilometers east of Vancouver.
Mounties say the man and an officer had a “interaction” at the hospital, which led to one officer firing their gun.
Police said in a statement that the man got medical help right away, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At 11:44 a.m., police got a call about a two-car crash on Highway 5 at the Zopkios off-ramp. When they got there, they found multiple people with non-life-threatening injuries and took them to the hospital.
The RCMP says that two of the injured people got into an argument, which led B.C. Emergency Health Services staff to call the police for help.
The emergency room at Fraser Canyon Hospital is closed for now while B.C.’s police watchdog looks into what happened. When a police interaction causes death or serious harm, the IIO is called to look into what happened.
Fraser Health said in a statement that ambulance services are still available in Hope and nearby towns. People who need help can call 911 or go to the Chilliwack General Hospital, which is about 50 kilometers southwest of Hope.
“All patients, staff, and medical staff are physically safe and unharmed,” the statement says. “However, the emergency room will be closed until the investigation is over.”
