Many Canadians are used to seeing snow in April
There is still a lot of snow in eastern Ontario. On the prairies, a blast of winter in early April put us to the test. But, as we complain (yet again) about how long winter is, this is a reminder that snow in April is normal, at least for many Canadians.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s records of the weather since 2000 show that April rain is by no means a given.
For example, people in Calgary may remember a small 3.2-centimeter dash of winter onJune 6, 2009. And Torontonians, Known for their zen-like way of dealing with snow,On April 24, 2002, people were met with 2.8 centimeters of snow.
A Colorado low brought a snowstorm to Manitoba. At least 20 centimeters of snow are on the way this week.Winnipeg residents shouldn’t put away their winter boots just yet, though, because the last snowfall of at least a centimeter since 2000 was on May 17, 2015.
Here is a look at the most snow that has fallen in a single day in the spring and the most recent big spring snowfall in some of Canada’s biggest cities.
Methodology note: Most of the time, weather stations at airports in each city provide the data. But in Regina, we chose to use station data from Qu’Appelle because there was more data there. A volunteer station called Qu’Appelle is about 50 kilometers from the center of Regina.
