At a tight turn west of Hurdman station, wheels were in contact with each other
After an inspection found that train wheels were touching a restraining rail, OC Transpo is improving its express shuttle service and moving all trains between the uOttawa and Hurdman stations to a single track.
Only recently did people figure out that friction was a safety issue.
During the recent shutdown that lasted several weeks, maintenance workers took off the rails that stop trains from derailing and moved them a few millimeters.
- It’s a problem The rails that hold up the LRT are on the move. What do they mean?
The transit service said online that until the rails can be fixed overnight, everyone will have to get on the train from the eastbound platform.
Acting general manager of transit services Michael Morgan sent a memo to councillors about the problem, saying that trains need to avoid a part of the westbound track between Hurdman station and the Rideau River bridge until the problem is looked into.
He wrote that customers should be ready for delays.
At other points on the tracks, there was no sign of contact. There are restraint rails near the Confederation Line’s tightest curves, which have been thought to be trouble spots since the service began.
During Thursday’s afternoon rush hour, the city’s recently added express shuttle will run every five minutes between Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations. Most of the time, between 3 and 6 p.m., the buses run every 10 minutes.
On Friday, regular service should start up again.
