The police say that they don’t think the suspect is still out there
After four people were found dead in a Prince Rupert, B.C., home on Tuesday night, the RCMP opened a murder investigation.
At about 9 p.m. PT on June 13, police found the body in a suburban neighborhood in the 100 block of Silverside Drive. This is a newer area on the east side of the North Coast city, where about 12,000 people live.
Constable Brody Hemrich says there are still a lot of people at the scene, but investigators don’t think there are any more suspects or dangers to the public.
When CBC News went to the property Wednesday afternoon, the yard, house, and two cars parked in the driveway and one parked on the street were all behind police tape.
The elementary school and high school are both less than one kilometer away from the house.
The names of the victims are not being made public.
“A terrible tragedy for our whole town.
Nick Adey, a council member and acting mayor of Prince Rupert, read a statement to CBC News in which he and the mayor and council offered condolences to the victims’ friends and family.
He said, “This is a terrible tragedy for our whole community.”
Adey told anyone who needed help to call 250-627-7779 to reach the RCMP’s victim service department.
He said that the event was hard to deal with because it happened so soon after a murder-suicide at a local mall in November 2022.
“It hits me really hard. You realize that things like this can happen in the world you live in. It is really very sad.”
Jennifer Rice, an MLA, said in a statement that her “heart breaks” for the people who have been hurt by “this terrible tragedy.”
“We’ve been through bad things before, and it’s important to remember how strong and capable we were when we helped each other through them. We can do it again, and we should.”
Hemrich said he wants to reassure the community that police are doing everything they can in their investigation.
He said, “We’re working hard to make sure this neighborhood is safe.”
