A witness heard gunshots and says it was a “very intense moment.
Kingston police are looking into a shooting that happened Friday afternoon west of downtown and near the Collins Bay prison.
Investigators have not said whether or not anyone was hurt in the incident.
They are looking for a group of armed men who were last seen driving north on Centennial Drive in a grey Honda Civic.
Police are telling people who see the car to stay away from it and instead call 911.
George Shorey said that he and some family members were stopped at the corner of Bath Road and Centennial Drive when they heard the “distinct” sound of shots being fired.
At first, he thought it might be a movie set, but he realized quickly that it wasn’t.
Shorey said he saw one or two people, and at least one of them was shooting at a car with a handgun.
“When I realized they were real shots, I told my wife, ‘Get the hell out of here,'” he said. “We had our six grandchildren in the car.”
Shorey said that after the shots were fired, the suspects got into the Honda and drove onto the prison grounds for a short time before speeding away.
He said that he didn’t see anyone get hurt, but he also said that he was worried about getting his grandchildren to safety.
Shorey said, “It was a very tense moment.” “As soon as I heard the gunshots, I went into a little bit of a panic mode. It was unbelievable.”
Around the corner of Bath Road and Centennial Drive, police tape was put up, and there were evidence markers on the ground.
A spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada said they were aware of what happened at Collins Bay Institute and that the prison is closed while the police investigate.
Between Queen Mary Road and Tanner Drive, Bath is closed, and police are asking drivers to stay away.
