Canada’s strategy for the Indo-Pacific is focused on deepening Canada’s engagement with the region, increasing trade, and strengthening security and defence ties. Canada’s strategy includes initiatives to promote open and fair trade; support local businesses; promote sustainable economic and energy security; fight corruption; and support gender equality and human rights. Canada is also working to enhance its diplomatic and defence presence in the region and to provide development assistance and support for regional health and security. Canada is also a member of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), an initiative that brings together Australia, India, Japan, and the United States to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

It is also one of the most economically dynamic regions, with rapid economic growth and an expanding middle-class population. The region is home to some of the world’s most advanced economies and many of the world’s most vibrant cities. It is also home to some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, with coral reefs, rain forests, and other natural wonders. In addition, the region contains a number of important shipping lanes, making it a strategic hub for maritime trade.

Canada will strive to strengthen its current alliances and establish new ones. In response to requests for greater participation from regional partners, Canada will increase its support in the areas of diplomacy, commerce, defence, and technology.
