Since the afternoon of July 17, Confederation Line has been closed
At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the City of Ottawa will talk about the latest LRT problems.
Since July 17, when it stopped running, the LRT has not been running. The latest shut down was caused by a problem with the bearings, but the city hasn’t said why it keeps happening.
Alstom, the company that made the train, and Rideau Transit Group (RTG), the group that built the Confederation Line, are redesigning the wheel hub assembly as a permanent fix, even though the problem’s root cause hasn’t been found yet.
Over the last two years, most of the problems with the light rail system in Ottawa have been caused by bearings.
Buses on the R1 line run the whole way, except between Cyrville and St-Laurent, where a shuttle connects the two stations. Riders have complained about long commutes and crowded buses, which has raised questions about whether riders will be compensated. At a media briefing on Monday, the head of OC Transpo refused to answer this question.
In the meantime, a college student has come up with creative ways to help other people avoid the buses that are late and full.
The city said that the LRT might be ready by the end of July.
