A 42-year-old man died after an SUV hit him, and a 38-year-old woman was left with “life-changing injuries.
Thunder Bay police want the driver of the SUV that hit and killed one pedestrian and seriously hurt the other on Monday afternoon to turn himself in.
The accident happened around 3:20 p.m. near the corner of Simpson Street and Northern Avenue.
At a press conference held Tuesday morning near the scene, police said that the two people were walking north on Simpson when they were hit from behind by the SUV, which had left the road and jumped the curb.
A 42-year-old man was killed, and a 38-year-old woman got “life-altering injuries,” according to the police.
Insp. Ryan Gibson, who is in charge of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s primary response branch and traffic services, said that surveillance video shows the SUV stopped on Simpson Street, not far from where the crash happened. The driver is then seen sitting in the car for a few minutes, after which he or she gets out and drives away.
The driver went into the nearby Intercity Shopping Centre, which can be seen on video.
Police have released the part of the video that shows a man with short hair, glasses, a thin build, and a black T-shirt entering the mall. They hope this will help find the suspect.
Gibson said, “I really hope that person has had that time to think about the bad choices they made.” “He needs to come to the police station.
Gibson said, “He needs to call his lawyer, come turn himself in, or just go to the Thunder Bay police station and turn himself in.””This is not going to go away.
“You might as well take care of it now instead of waiting until something bad has happened.”
Police ask for public’s hel
Gibson said Tuesday morning that he couldn’t say if the driver was drunk or not.
“Right now, we care about what we know and what we can prove. These inquiries are still going on.
“We’re just getting started. There must be a way to do this, so we’ll keep going and see where the information leads us.”
The names of the people who died have not been made public.
After the accident, a part of Simpson Street was closed to the public while police did an investigation at the scene. It is now back in business.
Anyone who knows something about what happened should call the police or Crime Stoppers.
